Hot fresh homemade biscuits can liven up any meal. They can be served at breakfast, lunch and supper. They also taste delicious alone, topped with homemade cream cheese and fruit butter. Making homemade biscuits is not hard at all and is actually quite enjoyable.
Easy Homemade Biscuits
2½ cups of self-rising flour
2 teaspoons of sugar
½ cup of butter or shortening (I use the lard I rendered from the pig we butcher.)
¾ to 1 cup of buttermilk or milk
In a bowl I mix the flour and sugar together. I then use a dough blender or a fork to cut in the lard until the mixture is crumbly.
Next, I stir in the buttermilk.
I scoop out the biscuit dough on a lightly floured cutting board. I use my hands to pat the dough to ½ inch thickness. It is important to not overwork the dough by kneading it. I cut the dough using my homemade biscuit cutter also known as a repurposed tin food can.
I place the biscuits on a lightly greased baking sheet and bake about 15 minutes or until golden brown at 400 °F.
After baking, I brush the biscuits with melted butter.
