Ingredients
1 medium onion, chopped
1/2 green pepper, chopped
1 small clove garlic, minced
1 cup uncooked rice
1/2 pound hamburger
1 can (15 ounces) tomato sauce
1-3/4 cups hot water
1 teaspoon salt
Pepper, to taste
1 tablespoon bacon bits
1/2 to 3/4 cup grated American cheese
Directions
- In large skillet over high heat, cook onion, green pepper, garlic, rice and hamburger until meat is lightly browned.
- Add tomato sauce, water, salt, pepper and bacon bits; mix well and bring to a boil. Cover and simmer for 25 minutes.
- Sprinkle cheese over top just before serving.

Sharon Whitney, Kennewick, Washington, is looking for a recipe she remembers preparing in the early 1980s. It was a rice dish that also included beef, onions, bell peppers and possibly mushrooms. She says her entire family loved it, which wasn’t an easy feat.
