Turkey Tip: Choose the Right Size

Select your turkey based on your guest list. Plan on 1 pound per person, if you want only a moderate amount of leftovers, or plan on 1 1/2 pounds per person if your guests have hearty appetites or you want more leftovers. And allow plenty of thawing time for larger frozen birds – up to six days in the refrigerator, or up to 12 hours using the cold-water method.

Turkey Tip: You Don't Have to Eat Until it Hurts

If you’d like to eat more healthful this Thanksgiving, plan ahead. As a guest for the feast you can do a number of things to help your health: Eat before you go to dinner (eat a wholesome and filling breakfast and lunch on turkey day, or add a healthy snack before you make the trek to the awaiting feast) to avoid overeating at dinner; be sensible when filling your plate (split the plate into fourths – half for vegetables, a quarter for lean meat and a quarter for starch); eat slowly and stop when you’re full; eat your turkey skinless; go for smaller portions on the side dishes; limit high-fat items; drink plenty of water – it will keep you hydrated and fill your stomach; and remember, moderation is key.

Turkey Tip: Planning Makes Perfect

Thanksgiving dinner is a simple one to prepare – even with regional specialities. It only takes some advance planning and preparation.
