My family is really working on eating better and eating foods that are more wholesome. One of my favorite investments to help with this was a Vitamix. There are so many wonderful things that I can make in it that aid in a healthier lifestyle. A weakness especially in the summer is ice cream, but thanks to my Vitamix, we can still indulge with a healthier ice cream. It is great how we can make a variety of ice cream flavors with just a few ingredients.
For us the taste is as good as anything that we would get elsewhere but we feel better about eating it. We start with the recipe for a basic vanilla. We take organic milk, organic sugar or stevia, organic vanilla and ice. From there we can add other things like frozen strawberries or bananas. We have used chocolate chips to make a chocolate version.
My husband most often is content with just the basic vanilla. I often crave the strawberry, but I also find that strawberry and banana together is so yummy. Here’s our basic recipe.
Vitamix strawberry ice cream was a nice treat after spending some time in the hot Texas outdoors.
Vitamix Ice Cream Recipe
1/4 cup milk
2 tablespoons sugar or 1 to 2 packets stevia (you can experiment with less sugar if you like)
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
Fruit or other items (if adding frozen fruit, use less ice)
2 cups or 1 tray ice
Add everything to the Vitamix; select variable 1 and turn the machine on then quickly increase the speed to Variable 10 and then to High. Use the tamper to help with mixing. Getting the ice crushed up enough is usually my biggest issue. The ice cream is usually ready when four mounds form after 30 to 60 seconds. Be careful not to overmix to avoid melting.
I think it takes a little practice to get the right texture. My husband likes more of a slushy texture, but I like a smoother texture. If you have a Vitamix and haven’t tried the ice cream yet, I highly recommend it. If you don’t have a Vitamix yet, I also highly recommend getting one.
