Swedish Ham Balls

This savory recipe for sweet meatballs was contributed by Mrs. Donald Gorton of Chariton, Iowa.

  • 1½ cups brown sugar
  • ½ cup vinegar
  • ½ cup water
  • 1 teaspoon dry mustard
  • 1 pound ground smoked ham
  • 1½ pounds ground pork
  • 2 cups bread crumbs
  • 2 eggs, well-beaten
  • 1 cup milk


  • Combine brown sugar, vinegar, water, and mustard in a bowl. Stir until sugar is dissolved.
  • In a separate bowl, combine ground ham, ground pork, bread crumbs, eggs, and milk. Mix thoroughly.
  • Form meat mixture into small balls. Place meatballs in a casserole dish. Pour brown sugar mixture over meatballs.
  • Bake in slow oven (275 F) for 1¼ hours. Baste frequently with sauce.
