Old Fashioned Vanilla Ice Cream Recipe

Ingredients

  • 1 quart whole milk, plus more as needed
  • 4 eggs yolks
  • 2 cups sugar, divided
  • 1 heaping tablespoon flour
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 2 teacups cream (scant 1-1/2 cups)

Directions

  • Combine 1 quart milk, egg yolks, 1 cup sugar, and flour in a large pan. Heat mixture slowly over medium-low heat until it reaches a temperature of 140 F and thickens.
  • Add remaining sugar, vanilla extract, cream, and enough additional milk to fill a 1-gallon freezer-safe container to within 3 or 4 inches of the top.
  • Chill mixture for several hours in refrigerator.
  • Churn in an ice cream machine. Alternatively, freeze mixture in freezer-safe container until solid.
