  • ½ cup milk
  • 2 cakes compressed yeast (4½ teaspoons)
  • 2 cups flour
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 4 teaspoons sugar
  • ½ cup lard
  • 1 egg, well-beaten
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 tablespoon cinnamon

  • Heat milk to lukewarm. Dissolve yeast in milk. Set aside.
  • Sift together flour, salt, and sugar in a mixing bowl. Work in lard until mixture is crumbly, like for baking powder biscuits.
  • Add beaten egg and milk mixture to flour, and mix together to form a smooth dough.
  • Put dough in a cloth and place in cold water for 1 hour. Meanwhile, mix sugar and cinnamon until thoroughly blended.
  • Remove dough from water. Twist off about 1 tablespoon of dough at a time and dip in cinnamon-sugar mixture.
  • Pull and twist dough pieces into any desired shape, and then place them on a greased baking sheet for 1 hour.
  • Bake 20 to 25 minutes in a moderate oven (350 F).
