Ingredients
- ½ cup milk
- 2 cakes compressed yeast (4½ teaspoons)
- 2 cups flour
- ½ teaspoon salt
- 4 teaspoons sugar
- ½ cup lard
- 1 egg, well-beaten
- 1 cup sugar
- 1 tablespoon cinnamon
Directions
- Heat milk to lukewarm. Dissolve yeast in milk. Set aside.
- Sift together flour, salt, and sugar in a mixing bowl. Work in lard until mixture is crumbly, like for baking powder biscuits.
- Add beaten egg and milk mixture to flour, and mix together to form a smooth dough.
- Put dough in a cloth and place in cold water for 1 hour. Meanwhile, mix sugar and cinnamon until thoroughly blended.
- Remove dough from water. Twist off about 1 tablespoon of dough at a time and dip in cinnamon-sugar mixture.
- Pull and twist dough pieces into any desired shape, and then place them on a greased baking sheet for 1 hour.
- Bake 20 to 25 minutes in a moderate oven (350 F).
