On the fourth Saturday of each month, volunteers help staffers at the Washington, D.C., Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens with maintenance and clean-up efforts. This week, for Earth Day, volunteers will gather from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, April 25.
Activities include removal of invasive plants, painting, lily pond restoration, trash removal, planting, pruning and more.
The gardens welcome walk-ins. For tracking purposes, it helps to provide advance notice for large (more than 10) groups. Volunteers under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian, and all volunteers sign a waiver form on site.
Wear clothing appropriate for the work, meaning long pants, long sleeve shirts, and no open toe shoes. Much of the work will take place in overgrown areas where thickets, thorns and poison ivy are present. The Park Service and the Friends of Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens will provide rubber boots, gloves, waders, tools and potable water, as well as power bars.
