Kellsey Trimble, Assistant Editor of GRIT Magazine, answers the reader-submitted question: “How do I build trust and a relationship with my horse?”

Building trust and a relationship with your horse takes some time. A horse and horse owner should spend ample amount of time together in order to learn each others’ personalities. Another way to establish trust with a horse is to develop a routine that allows your horse to know what is coming next. This will prevent surprises from spooking the horse.

Also be sure to provide positive reinforcement to your horse for a job well done. This could mean rewarding your horse with a carrot, an apple or a peppermint so that they learn to associate positive thoughts with you.
