My Family’s Favorite Classic Switchel Recipe

Try this classic switchel recipe! It's sure to be one of your family's favorites too.

  • 2 cups warm water
  • 1⁄4 cup molasses
  • 1⁄4 cup honey
  • 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
  • 2 teaspoons ground ginger


  • Combine all ingredients, and stir to dissolve molasses and honey. Allow to reach room temperature before serving.

You can use a fine strainer to remove the powdered ginger before serving this classic switchel, although our ancestors weren’t fussy about sediment at the bottom of a jug. Yields 2-1⁄2 cups.
