Bluegrass Hush Puppies Recipe

Classic Bluegrass Hush Puppies will complete any fish fry.

Bluegrass Hush Puppies



• Oil, for frying
• 2 cups cornmeal
• 1 teaspoon salt
• 1 teaspoon baking powder
• 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
• 1 egg, slightly beaten
• 1/2 cup water
• 1/2 cup buttermilk
• 1/2 cup chopped onion


1. In large cast-iron pan, heat oil to 375 F.

2. In large bowl, sift together cornmeal, salt, baking powder and baking soda. Add egg, water, buttermilk and onion, and mix well.

3. Drop by teaspoonfuls into hot oil. Fry for 3 to 5 minutes, or until golden brown. Remove from oil, and drain on paper towel-lined plate.
