Alida’s Clam Chowder Recipe

A thick, creamy soup, this is my mother’s recipe, and she still makes it.

1 pound bacon, diced
3 large onions, chopped
4 large potatoes, peeled and cubed
2 cups water
3 small cans minced clams
½ teaspoon black pepper
1 teaspoon sugar
Pinch thyme
¼ cup butter
¼ cup flour
4 cups milk
1 can evaporated milk

In skillet, fry bacon until crispy. Add onions and cook until browned.

I love Grit and what it stands for...survival with outreach for all. I love the fellowship and the tips, wisdom and American "can do" so many people share with all of us. Alida's Clam Chowder looks delicious. It combines both the east coast and the southern versions of clam chowder. I love the rich soupy milkiness of the recipe. I have made both east coast with milk, no bacon and southern chowder (with bacon and no milk) I prefer the east for comfort. I also use chicken broth (home made, AKA God's Elixir)instead of the whole milk, adding the canned cream at the end of the process. I plan to use her receipt. Thank you for sharing. Judith
