The Theoretical Farmers Almanack

By TRF Cullers

There is a space in every country girl’s heart that is “farm-shaped.” Some of us roll up our sleeves, step into work boots and go plow the back forty. And then, there are those of us who would prefer to sink down into an easy chair by the woodstove and flip through seed catalogues. I fear I belong to the latter category. I enjoy planning a garden, sketching out raised bed plots and pasting brightly colored seed packets into my gardening journal. But when it comes to actually digging in the dirt, I sometimes come up short on ambition. As a theoretical farmer, I have the best of both worlds: the literal and the invented.  The Theoretical Farmers Almanack is made up of both the real and the imaginary—mostly the imaginary. The characters I write about are products of an over active imagination, and are not based on anyone I know. The gardening snippets contain elements of truth and very small sprinklings of wisdom.
