Close to the Earth in Alaska

By Susan B. Sommer

“Close to the earth” refers to how Susan was raised in Alaska—commercial salmon fishing, flying in small planes to hunting camp, and learning to drive in a Coot. Now, she and her husband live on seven acres in Southcentral Alaska. Though they’re only 20 miles from downtown Anchorage, they’re worlds away in how they strive to live their lives. They garden, harvest salmon, hunt moose and caribou, pick berries, cut and chop firewood, explore the backcountry, and dream of retirement so they can do more of the above.
