Hay Fever

By Amy W. Hill

I grew up in a small town in North Carolina and developed an appetite for rural life by spending time with my grandparents, who raised Angus cattle, honeybees, apples, and vegetables. While my current experience is decidedly more urban, my concerns over factory farming practices, environmental degradation, climate change, and food security keep me connected to rural issues. I am fortunate to live in an area that keenly supports local farms and farmers and I’m proud to help carry on that tradition. While I’d like to be self-supporting, it’s not in the cards right now. Instead, I strive to be “as agrarian as possible under the circumstances.” Along the way, I do my best to teach my kids, neighbors, friends, and anyone who’ll give me a soapbox about how hard it is to grow food well, and how they can be good stewards of the environment and supporters of those who do this important work.
