Hunting for Views: Opening Weekend Update

A photo of Paul GardenerI wish I had better news on the hunting front, but unfortunately all I was able to harvest were some good views. The upside to that is that, regardless of how much I'd like to sit around a table with all of you and share some fresh venison, it's a lot easier to sit around our computers and let me share the views.

Hope you all enjoy.

Top of Monte Cristo

This was at the top of a mountain about 45 minutes from my house. It's called Monte Cristo. It's regularly on the lists of best places in the west to view the fall colors. In this case, it was plum full of hunters on horseback and all the trails were rutted out really bad from it. I opted to only enjoy the views and moved on to another location.

Doe and yearling

At the next location, where I arrived a little later that afternoon, I immediately came across this doe and a yearling. Look closely, they're hard to spot. The doe's on the right of center and the yearling in on the left of it with it's head down. Hard to see huh? Imagine trying to spot them from 250-350 yards away? That's a common shot range when hunting in the west.

@Paul, I’m sorry to hear that you have not bagged your deer yet. Maybe next week will be better. The views were terrific. I think our hunting here in Nebraska has already started. We have many seasons for deer. We have bow season, rifle season, and black power season. So if you are not limited by method the total season can be many weeks. I believe one could get a tag for each season so it would be possible to get three deer a year. I’m just not a hunter so unless one just falls down breaks a leg and dies in my backyard; I most likely won’t be eating venison this year. Good hunting Paul.

Thanks Caleb, Unfortunately, I think your hunting season is a lot longer than ours. My season total will go from the 9th to the 21st. So this weekend will be my last to really get out there. My boy has another tag though that goes from the 23rd to the 30th, so there's always him to rely on! Good luck to you too. P~

Beautiful, Paul! Makes me want to get in the hardwoods. I've been out twice – haven't seen any whitetails, but plenty of squirrels and even a ram sheep and a donkey. It's still pretty warm in Kansas, but like you, just getting out there to sit makes my day. The rut should be heating up here in two or three weeks around here. Good luck this weekend! I hope your shot flies straight, and the deer expires quickly.
