According to a recent post on the website of The Washington Post, there are now 6,132 farmers’ markets in the United States, a 16 percent increase over the 2009 number recorded in the National Farmers Market Directory.

At American Farmland Trust, a contest puts the spotlight on farmers’ markets across the country. Four categories of market size are open for voting in the Favorite Farmers Markets contest. The top 20 in each category are listed on the AFT website and voting ends at midnight on August 31. Your local farmers’ market needs your continued support so that it can get the recognition it deserves.
ATF uses the contest to promote the value of farmers’ markets in communities, and to make the connection between fresh local foods and the local farms and farmland that supply them. Farmers markets play a critical role in keeping farmers on the land and helping farms thrive. By providing farmers with a venue where they can provide their much-sought-after products, farmers’ markets are helping to save the land
