A varied group of responses appeared in the mail, and several offered advice.

Donald Oswald, Haswell, Colorado, writes, “Follow the instructions carefully or the batter will create one lumpy drink. One word of caution: If you add the water before the whiskey, you will have a stringy drink. Also, these go down well on cold winter nights.”

Kathy Boston, Spring Lake, Michigan, says the secret to a delicious beverage is a stiff batter and a warm mug.

Jennifer Quail, Dowagiac, Michigan, sends this suggestion: “Modern bartender’s note: I would suggest either using freshly purchased eggs or pasteurized eggs. If they use store-bought eggs, coddle them first in a boiling water bath. DO NOT use egg substitutes.”
