Chuck Fuson, Granger, Iowa, sends a recipe that sounds fairly close to Inell’s request. He writes, “This is a recipe my mother made about every Christmas when I was younger (1940s). Don’t know if it is what you are looking for, but it is one of my favorite cakes (very rich).”

Date Walnut Cake Recipe
1 package dates, finely chopped
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 cup boiling water
1 cup sugar
2 tablespoons butter
2 eggs
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon cinnamon, optional
1 cup walnut meats
Flour
Heat oven to 350°F.
Combine dates and baking soda; pour boiling water over top and let stand awhile.
Combine sugar, butter, eggs, baking powder, cinnamon (if desired), nuts, and enough flour to make thick batter.
Pour into baking dish; bake for 40 to 45 minutes, or until done.
Coconut Frosting Recipe
2 cups chopped dates
2 cups chopped nuts
2 cups water
2 heaping tablespoons flour
Coconut
Combine dates, nuts, water and flour; add coconut to your liking. In saucepan over medium heat, cook until thick. Spread over cake while hot.
