“Cleaning your house while your kids are still growing up is like shoveling the walk before it stops snowing.” – Phyllis Diller

There are many reasons why making your own household cleaners are a good idea. One reason is that the ingredients are simpler and less dangerous. You don’t have to worry about toxic fumes or harmful side effects to either humans and pets. Another reason to make your own homemade cleaners is the financial aspect. Store-bought cleaners can be expensive. You can often make your own cleaning solutions from basic ingredients that you probably already have in your own home. Lastly, making your own household cleaners is a very resourceful act. It is making do with what you already have and creating solutions to care for yourself and your own family.

I have a simple homemade all-purpose cleaner that I mix up and pour into a recycled spray bottle. I use this all purpose cleaner to clean counter tops, shelves, door knobs and table tops. I have been using it for a few years now and have no complaints about it. It is simple to make, inexpensive, and environmentally friendly.

Homemade All-Purpose Cleaner

1 cup white vinegar

1/2 cup  water

About 10 drops eucalyptus oil

Pour all ingredients into a spray bottle and shake before use. Spray the mixture over the surface to be cleaned or onto a soft, damp cloth. I love to repurpose old or lost mated socks as my cleaning cloths. They are the right size for cleaning and are very absorbent. And, in case I am cleaning up a very goopy mess, they can be easily tossed into the trash for disposal or into the washing machine for cleaning.
