The U.S. Forest Service will fund 27 land acquisition projects in 15 states to help safeguard clean water, provide recreational access, preserve wildlife habitat, enhance scenic vistas, and protect historic and wilderness areas.

The $40.6 million will go for projects in Alaska, California, Colorado, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Michigan, Missouri, Montana, New Mexico, North Carolina, Oregon, Tennessee, Utah and Washington.

The money is available through the Land and Water Conservation Fund, created to provide funding for governmental purchase of land, water and wetlands.
