Back in Mt. Vernon, Illinois, during the summer of 1935 — I was 6 years old — my two older brothers had a GRIT paper route. I wanted to help them, so my mother made me a bag to carry my papers in. Our route was five miles long, and we sold the paper for 5 cents. We delivered the paper until we moved to Florida in August of 1936.

Above is a photograph my mother took of the three of us. I am sitting in the wagon.
