Missouri’s West Plains High School wins 2011 FFA Challenge

A Tractor iconA Missouri FFA chapter has won the grand prize worth more than $8,000 in a seven-state competition that encouraged FFA chapters to connect with farmers in their local communities.

West Plains High School’s FFA chapter won the 2011 FFA Chapter Challenge, a pilot competition sponsored by Monsanto. The chapter will be able to send six students and an adult advisor on an all-expenses-paid trip to the 2011 National FFA Convention in Indianapolis. The chapter will also receive $1,500 in credit with the National FFA Organization to help pay for FFA-related activities and expenses throughout the year.

West Plains earned 469 votes. Lawrence County High School’s FFA chapter in Moulton, Ala., and John Glenn High School’s FFA chapter in Walkerton, Ind., were the closest competitors, finishing with 416 and 407 votes, respectively.

The top 10 FFA chapters in each state that earned the most votes also received a $1,500 line of credit with FFA. Monsanto is also awarding each of the seven state FFA organizations a $1,500 grant for participating in the competition.

Since March 7, FFA chapters in Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, Missouri, Minnesota, Georgia and Alabama sent members into their communities to meet local farmers, learn about their operations and connect with them by sharing what their FFA chapter is doing in their community. Farmers were then asked to visit FFAChapterChallenge.com and vote for their favorite FFA chapter.

“The inaugural FFA Chapter Challenge has been an overwhelming success,” said National FFA Foundation executive director Rob Cooper. “Thousands of FFA members made positive connections with local farmers. The intent of the challenge was to encourage FFA members meet their area farmers, learn about their business and connect with them – and in many cases reconnect with them because students found out that many of their local farmers are former FFA members. We are thrilled with the level of participation among students and farmers and look forward to staging a larger campaign with Monsanto next year, inviting even more FFA chapters to compete.”

Participation in the 2011 FFA Chapter Challenge was high. More than 360 FFA chapters and a combined 22,000 members earned more than 10,385 votes from farmers across the seven-state area. Website traffic was high throughout the competition as more than 10,740 unique users visited the site through May 1.

“Monsanto is committed to youth in agriculture because we know our industry will only be as strong as the next generation of agriculture leaders,” said John Raines, vice president of customer advocacy at Monsanto. “The FFA Chapter Challenge allowed us to increase our valuable partnership with the National FFA organization while helping the local chapters connect with farmers in their communities.”

The National FFA Foundation builds partnerships with industry, education, government, other foundations and individuals to secure financial resources that fund FFA activities, recognize member achievements, develop student leaders and support the future of agriculture education. Nearly 82 percent of all funds received by the foundation support FFA and agricultural education opportunities.

Formerly known as Future Farmers of America, the National FFA Organization provides agricultural education to more than 523,000 student members in grades seven through 12 who belong to one of 7,487 local FFA chapters throughout the U.S., Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. The organization operates under a federal charter granted by the 81st U.S. Congress and it is an integral part of public instruction in agriculture. For more, visit http://www.ffa.org.

Toro Introduces Synthetic Oil Designed for Small Engines

Tractor iconDesigned specifically for lawn and garden equipment, Toro’s new Full Synthetic 4-Cycle Engine Oil provides extreme performance in all temperatures, enhancing engine life.

Toro OilEngine oils formulated for automotive applications don’t always provide the optimum level of corrosion protection in the harsh environments and long periods of storage common with lawn and garden equipment. Toro® Full Synthetic Engine Oil delivers special rust and corrosion-prohibiting additives, protection against high heat, easier cold starts, plus increased anti-oxidants and detergent additives.

Using Toro Full Synthetic 4-Cycle Oil in your lawn and garden equipment protects your engine components from premature wear caused by metal-to-metal contact that occurs during use. That’s because Toro’s oil contains higher anti-wear additives generally not found in traditional automotive or other lawn and garden oils. Automotive engine oils are typically designed for lower-revving engines; Toro Synthetic 4-Cycle Oil is designed for high-revving and higher-temperature small engines.

Toro’s Full Synthetic 4-Cycle Engine Oil can be used in any gas or diesel small engine specifying SAE 30/10W-30, including Toro products with a Kawasaki®, KOHLER®, Honda, Diahatsu, or Briggs & Stratton small engine. It’s available at your local Toro dealer (www.toro.com/dealer).

Lawn-Boy Mowers Now Feature Kohler OHV Engine

A Tractor iconAlways known for outstanding value and durability, Lawn-Boy mowers feature a revitalized lineup with the addition of an all-new Kohler overhead valve (OHV) engine.

With 6.5 ft-lb gross torque* that can power through the thickest of lawns, this state-of-the-art engine is designed with commercial-grade durability, yet it incorporates these easy-to-use features:

Lawn Boy mowerThe engine’s Easy-Pull recoil starter greatly reduces friction and the pulling effort required -- making Lawn-Boy mowers even easier to start.

The Smart Choke feature means there’s no need to prime or choke the engine.

An Easy-Fill opening on the gas tank makes refueling effortless. It’s angled instead of vertical and 45 percent larger than a standard opening to greatly reduce fuel spills.

The 20-inch, steel cutting deck on these mowers features a deep dome design that makes it a highly efficient mulcher. Combining this deck design with Lawn-Boy’s tri-cut blade ensures grass clippings virtually disappear, eliminating the need to bag clippings. The deck is narrow enough to mow in tight spaces and is lightweight, as well. In fact, the push model (10603) weighs only 68 lbs. The self-propelled model (10604) weighs just 72 pounds and has rear wheel drive for good traction, even with a full bag. Plus, the variable speed self-propel transmission is maintenance free. The deck is also 3-in-1 ready for mulching, bagging and side-discharge.

Want even more convenience? Lawn-Boy’s TimeOut blade stop system (model 10605) allows the operator to stop the blade without having to restart the engine. These mowers are ideal for anyone who has numerous obstacles in their yard or needs to stop frequently to empty grass clippings.

Lawn-Boy backs its products with a two-year No Worry Warranty that covers the entire mower, a three-year power train warranty on the transmission and engine, as well as a three-year Tru-Start Commitment. If the mower doesn’t start on one or two pulls within its first three years, Lawn-Boy will fix it for free. See your retailer for warranty details.

Lawn-Boy mowers are available this spring, starting around $259 (USD), exclusively at The Home Depot. Learn more at www.lawnboy.com.

Purina’s New Layer Feed Produces Eggs with 300 Percent More Omega-3

Tractor iconST. LOUIS, MISSOURI — Land O'Lakes Purina Feed helps address the lack of Omega-3, an essential fatty acid, in American’s diets with their latest innovative feed: Purina Layena Plus Omega-3. Layena Plus Omega-3 is specially formulated to produce exceptionally nutritious eggs, made with the same natural grains as the original Layena feed, with added flaxseed to provide families with triple the Omega-3s in each egg.* Purina Layena Plus Omega-3, developed by Purina nutritionists, is the first known complete pelleted layer feed available nationwide that significantly enhances the Omega-3 content of backyard eggs.

Both Omega-3s and Omegas-6s are essential for proper heart and brain function, growth and development, but the body cannot manufacture them on its own for optimal health, so they must come from the diet.

Layena Plus Omega-3 Bag"It’s critical to maintain the appropriate balance of Omega-3 to Omega-6. Unfortunately, the typical American diet provides far more Omega-6 than is necessary and this imbalance can prove detrimental over time," said Dr. Mikelle Roeder, a nutritionist with Land O’ Lakes Purina Feed. "You can tilt the balance in your favor by looking for opportunities to add Omega-3 to your family’s diet. Eating eggs produced through an exclusive diet of Purina Layena Plus Omega-3 are a wholesome and delicious way to add some of those much-sought-after Omega-3 fatty acids."

Purina Layena Plus Omega-3 is formulated to produce more than 200mg Omega-3 per large egg* and has a natural vegetarian formula with added vitamins, minerals, and trace nutrients and without added antibiotics or hormones. Like all Purina SunFresh Recipe Poultry Feeds, Layena Plus Omega-3 contains marigold extract for rich golden yolks, key levels of calcium and manganese for strong shells with fewer cracks and an optimized level of Vitamin E to support a healthy immune system.

"My flock of heritage chickens deserves the same natural nutrition we provide for our families, and that’s why I feed them Layena Plus Omega-3," said P. Allen Smith, the garden and home expert who provides lifestyle advice on the NBC Today Show and PBS. "But this feed doesn’t just help me raise healthy chickens, it also means wholesome eggs for myself."

Customers are invited to enter the Purina 60 Day Challenge to experience Purina’s results for their own family and flock. Visit www.purinadifference.com to register for a feeding trial.

Purina poultry feeds are available through a network of select dealers. Purina Certified Expert Dealers, a segment of Purina’s authorized dealers, carry the full line of products and are specially trained to answer questions about care, feeding and management of these and other animals. Consumers can find a knowledgeable Purina Certified Expert Dealer, other local Purina dealers and sign up for the rewards program to receive coupons and offers by visiting www.purinamills.com/rewards. For tips about raising poultry, consumers can visit www.facebook.com/PurinaPoultry.

*When fed a diet of Layena Plus Omega exclusively for at least 3 weeks. Based on large egg (50g). Results may vary with factors such as total diet and hen health. A typical egg contains 65 mg Omega 3.

Sales Triple For Modern Hand Water Pump

Tractor icon Sales for Simple Pump, a hand-operated well pump, have tripled compared to the same time last year, as word about its versatility, reliability and durability have spread. Because Simple Pump is the only hand pump that can fit alongside an existing submersible in the majority of wells, this increase is a direct indication of dramatically increasing concern about reliable access to water.

“We have many well drillers and resellers contacting us because they’ve heard how revolutionary this pump is,” said Simple Pump owner, Gary Wittig. “Website sales to home owners are way up too, as word gets out that this pump can do things no other pump can and people increasingly want to be prepared for any scenario.”

Hand Water PumpCAPABLE AND VERSATILE

Simple Pump can deliver water from a depth of 350 feet — far below the reach of any other hand pump and requiring just 21 lbs of effort. No competitor comes close. It can work as a hand-operated back-up pump — right alongside a motorized submersible, in the same four or six inch well. It's so easy to use, a child can pump up to 5 gallons per minute.

Simple Pump can operate equally well as a primary pump. For new wells, an economical two-inch wellbore is enough for the Simple Pump. Or it can be fitted into existing four or six inch wells. Simple Pump can operate for years as a hand pump, and then in minutes, be upgraded to motorized operation. Computer controlled machining assures precise fit between any pump and motor at any time.

It operates happily in frozen-solid ground, because of a weep-hole that lets the top four feet drain out between each use.

Materials include lead-free stainless steel, graphite impregnated bronze bushings and aircraft grade aluminum (aluminum does not touch water). Manufacturing quality is exceptional. Major components of the Simple Pump are machined in an aerospace-class plant, alongside the NEWT deep-sea diving suit and the space-roving Canadarm. Quality of materials and manufacturing equal efficiency plus durability; Simple Pump is so durable, it has a 50-year plus lifespan.

SOLAR POWER FEATURE

The low power draw and high efficiency make the Simple Pump ideal for running on solar. The pump can be set up with batteries, or run directly from the solar panel with no battery necessary. It is so efficient it can run on one 130W solar panel in many areas, or two in cloudier zones.

EASY TO INSTALL

Even a novice can install a Simple Pump in about two hours. About two-thirds of Simple Pump’s clients do their own installation. Some other pumps need lifting rigs and heavy, specialized tools to install or for maintenance. For most installations, the Simple Pump pump needs one person, and some ordinary tools (such as vice grips and Allen wrenches). Normal easy-to-do maintenance consists of replacing a set of seals once every five years.

BEING ABLE TO DEPEND ON YOUR WATER SUPPLY MAKES ALL THE DIFFERENCE

A study by a Stanford University multidisciplinary team showed that a change in water delivery could turn African villages with malnourished children into net exporters of food. Only two changes were needed -- developing a RELIABLE water supply and installing drip irrigation.

Drip irrigation does not require great quantities of water, but it does require reliability. Most hand-operated water-well pumps in Africa are of the same basic design, and are uniformly unreliable. A 2007 survey across 21 nations showed 36 percent of these pumps were broken down and standing unused at any given time! Merely adding the factor of reliability to their water access with cheap drip irrigation transformed people’s lives.

SO WHAT DO AFRICAN VILLAGES HAVE TO DO WITH US?

The same factors making huge differences in African villages are as important in the developed world. Rural areas routinely experience power outages each winter. People are also preparing for scenarios such as wildfires, earthquakes, hurricanes and worse. Increasingly, people know they can’t realistically depend on the grid to deliver life-critical water.

Simple Pump offers excellent value, deeper reach than any other hand pump and many other special and literally unique features. But during a routine three-day power outage or a much longer and worse scenario, RELIABILITY is the key to survival. This pump is so reliable, hundreds are running 24/7/365 in industrial applications, using solar power to move contaminated water, with very little downtime ---demanding performance well beyond the needs of most families.

AN ASSURED WATER SUPPLY

Manna Pro Expands its Offerings

Tractor iconCHESTERFIELD, MISSOURI – Manna Pro Products, LLC, is acquiring three well-known brands in the equine care category from Summit Industries, Inc. The agreement includes the purchase of the Corona and Horseman’s Dream animal care brands in addition to an exclusive license to market the Lexol leather care brand to the equine market. Summit will continue to sell and distribute Lexol to its existing non-equine markets. The brands complement Manna Pro’s existing product offerings, which range from quality animal nutrition products to grooming and stable management products, and will be available wherever Manna Pro products are sold.

Manna Pro produces high-quality animal nutrition and care products for a broad range of animals. Its largest group of products is geared to horses, but the company also produces feed for backyard poultry and goats, rabbits, cattle, pigs, and companion animals. Manna Pro’s product lines primarily serve the “lifestyle farmer” market – people who own acreage with farm animals, and operate their farms as a hobby rather than a business. The company’s flagship product – Calf-Manna – has been a staple of animal owners for over 80 years. Its products appeal to people who view their animals not as merely livestock, but as a part of their lifestyle, and even as a part of their family.

According to John Howe, President of Manna Pro Products LLC, product innovation, consistently high quality, and excellent service are keys to the company’s continued growth. “Our customers in the equine and other lifestyle farming segments rely on Manna Pro to bring them the very best options for animal care and nutrition,” Howe says. “We are dedicated to serving as a one-stop resource for the finest brands, and we are excited to bring three trusted names to the Manna Pro family with this acquisition.”

With the acquisition, Manna Pro customers will now be able to find the following products at retail locations across the country:

· The Lexol family of cleaners and conditioners is carefully formulated to maintain the beauty and durability of all types of fine leather, and its alkaline-free products are trusted to maintain the beauty and extend the life of leather saddles and tack. Horse owners also prefer Lexol’s Neatsfoot Leather Dressing, which is specially formulated to condition and protect light-colored leather without darkening or leaving behind a greasy finish.

· Corona products are lanolin-based animal care products and include Corona Ointment, Corona Hoof Dressing, Corona Shampoo Concentrate, and Corona Udder Butter. With over 100 years of experience in helping care for human and animal skin, Corona products have become an essential in stables around the country.

· Horseman’s Dream is a line of animal skin and wound care products widely known for its Veterinary Cream, the “original” first-aid cream compounded from stabilized Aloe Vera. Other Aloe based products such as Liniment, Fly Gone Fly Repellant and Shampoos are now a part of the Horseman’s Dream family.

The Corona Stable of Products acquisition is part of the Manna Pro strategy to expand its offerings in the care and nurturing of animals. According to Howe, “Manna Pro is able to leverage its strengths in retail distribution, new product development, package design, and consumer marketing to give additional focus to the brands we acquire. When customers buy products that are part of the Manna Pro family, they can be confident they are receiving excellent quality at a great value across every product line.”

Big Stinky Fly Trap

Tractor icon How good is a product that has been around for almost 60 years? DARN GOOD!

Big Stinky Fly TrapBig Stinky is the first truly successful approach to fly control. Scientist – inventor Bill Brown developed the trap during the late 1940’s when many epidemics were widespread. His background in organic chemistry gave him the idea of taking advantage of the “sex scent” of female flies. A special fluid is mixed initially with raw fish or lean meat to get the action started. Flies are attracted to this ideal egg-laying formula, enter the one-way blackened duct and then become trapped inside the container. The female flies are encouraged to give off a sex scent which attracts the male flies. Both are digested with enzymes to provide a scent that is superlatively attractive to more female flies. The cycle is repeated.

The by-product makes an excellent fertilizer. Users find that buried flies they have caught make good fertilizer because they produce larger than normal flowering plants. The Wisconsin State Testing Laboratory has found that flies contain a significant quantity of nitrogen, potash and phosphorous. Just bury the flies six inches deep near the roots of slow-growing trees, shrubs or flowers and watch them grow! Who can resist buying the best flytrap in the world and saving money on valuable fertilizer at the same time!

Generac Power Washers

Tractor iconWAUKESHA, WISCONSIN – A leader in portable engine-driven products, Generac Power Systems, Inc, Waukesha, Wisconsin, has re-entered the power washer market with the introduction of a new line of power washers.

“Power washers are a perfect fit for Generac,” says Peter Chiello, senior product manager, Generac. “They represent a natural evolution for us, especially given our expertise in portable generator design and our previous work on power washers. We’re excited about our new line of power washers because we believe they really address what our customers are looking for – quality, value and ease of use.”

Generac conducted extensive research with users to learn what was needed from power washers and incorporated many new design elements to address those needs. These include a Generac overhead valve (OHV) horizontal-shaft engine on every power washer. Many competitive consumer-grade power washers use vertical-shaft engines. Generac horizontal-shaft engines make the pumps more accessible by positioning them well above the ground so users don’t have to kneel down to make hose connections.

Additionally, Generac OHV engines come standard with low-oil shutdown – a feature that is not available on many competitive engines — to protect and prolong the life of the engine. As for power, each engine is the largest available for power washers with these power ratings. Both the engine and pump are perfectly balanced over the axle and wheels for almost effortless maneuverability, regardless of terrain.

Generac also completely redesigned the spray gun to feature a soft grip that reduces fatigue, and an inverted fulcrum spray trigger that can be pulled and held with only a minimum of effort. Each spray gun also features Quick-Click™ nozzle tips that are easy to replace without turning the power washer off. On Generac’s commercial-grade units, the spray gun also comes with an adjustable auxiliary handle for additional comfort and control when cleaning.

Generac commercial-grade power washers feature a welded steel frame to protect the engine and pump from the rigors of professional use. Both the residential and commercial-grade units feature tool-free assembly, making it fast and easy to assemble and use the power washer out of the box.

Generac is introducing three residential-grade power washer models and three commercial-grade power washers:

Residential Commercial
2500 PSI @ 2.3 GPM 3000 PSI @ 2.8 GPM
2700 PSI @ 2.3 GPM 3300 PSI @ 3.2 GPM
3000 PSI @ 2.7 GPM 4000 PSI @ 4.0 GPM

Focused for more than 50 years on the design and manufacture of generators, Generac engineered and built its own air-cooled engines in the early 1990s, specifically for use on portable and residential generators. Soon after, the company applied its engines and portable product expertise to power washers, making them readily available to consumers for the first time at a price they could afford. This work earned Generac several patents for innovative product design that have since changed the industry, and allowed the company to capture about 50 percent of the US market for power washers.

In 1998, Generac sold its portable products business, which included power washers, to focus on developing home standby generators — a strategic decision that allowed the company to become the world’s largest provider of home standby generators. In 2008, upon expiration of a non-compete agreement related to the sale, Generac re-entered the portable generator market and is now re-introducing power washers.

The full line of Generac power washers will be available for sale in the spring of 2011.

For more information on Generac’s power washers, as well as its complete line of residential and commercial products, visit www.generac.com or call 888-GENERAC.
