Lil Suburban Homestead

By Karen Lynn

Making her home in Wilmington, North Carolina, Karen Lynn says her focus on this blog is about family. “We love sharing our family’s homesteading, back to roots, and self reliant journey with all of you!”

She is currently working on the garden. She’s “adding more edible items to our homestead to continue it to be the ‘Edible Arrangement’ I write about on our blog!” And on her to-do list is raising rabbits for meat.

Karen and her family are suburban homesteaders/ “My motto at our Lil’ Suburban Homestead is ‘If you have a home you’re a homesteader!'”

The family’s garden is a major part of her family’s journey. “We love to eat whole foods that are unprocessed for good health and to also leave a gentler foot print on this earth!”

The garden currently contains chicory, raddicio, tomatoes, green beans, spinach, radishes, Jerusalem artichokes, green globe artichokes, eggplant, peppers, and much more, she says. She also plants a number of culinary and healing herbs: aloe, beauty berry, rosemary, fennel, thyme, cilantro, lavender, oregano, basil, mint, bee balm, comfrey and more. “On our property in suburbia, which is approximately a third of an acre, we have elderberry, raspberry, blackberry and blueberry bushes, grape vines, fig trees, a peach tree, almond tree, a mulberry tree, and a choke cherry tree.”

The suburban homestead is also home to a number of chickens (Rhode Island Red, Buff Orpington, Barred Rock and Americauna), bees, a dog and a cat.

Karen says of her country skills: “We can, dehydrate, and freeze our food. We mend clothing and can sew and crochet blankets, and my husband the Viking can repair just about anything. We are beekeepers, raise chickens, and both love to garden!”

Her philosophy on country life is pretty simple. “Simple, more self-reliant living is a higher quality of life and one that I’m grateful for!”
