Home remedies really work. Just ask the doctors at the Mayo Clinic. A recent newsletter covers chicken soup to ease cold symptoms, using duct tape to remove warts, and other helpful remedies.

  • Chicken soup has been tested by moms and scientists alike, finding the soup relieves cold and flu symptoms and helps relieve congestion. And it doesn’t have to be homemade. Canned soup works just as well, particularly the low-sodium varieties.
  • Oatmeal soothes dry, itchy and irritated skin. Finely grind either quick or old-fashioned oatmeal in a food processor, then sprinkle the powder under full-force, running water for a soothing bath.
  • Milk of magnesia takes out the sting of a canker sore. Dab a small amount on the sore three or four times a day.
  • Duct tape works great in a lot of situations, including wart removal. Cover the warts on fingers or the backs of hands and feet with duct tape and leave it on for six days. After removing the tape, soak the wart in water and gently rub with a pumice stone or emery board. Allow the skin to breathe overnight, and repeat the process for up to two months.
  • The juice from aloe leaves helps promote healing in mild to moderate burns.
