For the do-it-yourselfer, there are many sources of pre-built saunas. Home Depot carries a pre-fab sauna kit that uses ceramic infrared heat and sells for under $2,000. It seats two people and includes an audio entertainment system. Online marketers, like www.Saunas.com and www.SaunaTec.com, offer a wide selection of pre-cut and pre-built kits for indoor or outdoor installation.

Models available from Saunas.com range in price from $2,300 to $7,200, and in size from 4-by-4-feet to 11-by-12 feet, accommodating 2 to 12 or more people. The Web site lists all the materials included, and you can download their complete nine-page installation guide.

Models from SaunaTec.com are for free-standing, exterior installation or indoor use. Packages can be tailored according to wood species including everything from Nordic white spruce to aspen to western red cedar.
