What Are You Waiting For?

RELATED CONTENT

I have to say that my recent subscription to your magazine has already been highly enjoyable. You do a very nice job of covering several topics of interest for the small hobby farmer. I especially enjoyed the article on raising chickens in your September/October issue (“Perfect Chickens”). For those of your readers who don’t have chickens . . . what could they possibly be waiting for? You don’t need a huge flock or a large space to enjoy wonderful farm-fresh eggs or the perks of having your very own personal fan club. We get great pleasure (and a good bit of comic relief) just looking out our window and seeing the feathered diversity in the yard.

I wanted to share a couple of pictures of our gang. Enjoy the pictures, and thank you, GRIT.

Here at GRIT we agree wholeheartedly about the joy of poultry watching, Connie. Thanks so much for sharing pictures of your brood. We really enjoy hearing from our readers, and seeing pictures is even better! – Editors

More Chicken Breeds

The article on heritage chickens (September/October) was well presented. I realize that space doesn’t allow all the heritage breeds, but some great heirloom breeds were distinctly absent from the article. These breeds are known for their laid-back attitude, good to excellent egg production and usefulness as a fryer or small roasting bird. The Speckled Sussex, Buff Orpington, Jersey Giant, Australorps, New Hampshire Reds (I’d mention Rhode Island Reds, but I’m New Hampshire born and raised) and most of the Rocks (Barred, Partridge) were, and still are, great choices for barnyard or backyard flocks.
Thanks again for a nice article.

We love chickens of all kinds, Steve – thanks for writing! Any chance you could post some shots of the other breeds on our photo blog site (cu.GRIT.com)? For our coverage of the Sussex, Australorp, Andalusian, Redcap and Minorca breeds, check out the extended online version of the article. (Note: This issue, we’re offering a handsaw version of the “In the Shop” article online.) – Editors
